Lennart Hanson Memorial Fund For Research and Development Funding

1. Lennart Hansson’s memorial fund provides economic support to long term clinical research projects. Eligibility is restricted to individuals or groups involved principally in new research relating to the risk factors affecting cardiovascular disease, particularly hypertension, diabetes and hyperlipidemia although research into new risk factors related to the so-called metabolic syndrome will also be considered. Funds will be disbursed to individual researchers or groups working in Sweden.

2. The allotted funds shall be used to support projects run by individuals or groups of researchers by helping to recruit younger researchers to the field of clinical cardiovascular research. Repeat funding can be issued to the same applicant or applicants subject to item 11. Doctors who are currently in pursuit of a thesis and are in clinical or research positions will be given precedence.

3. The Board of the Lennart Hansson Memorial Fund will decide, what funds, in what manner and when they shall be disbursed.

4. The Stipendium will be announced on the web page for the Swedish Hypertension Society (http://www.hypertoni.org) but may be announced in other relevant media.

5. Applications must be written using the provided template and accompanied with curriculum vita, publications list, a short description of the research program comprising of the main headings, background, goals, methods and the significance of the program. A recommendation from the institute or clinical head of the institute or clinic where the research is based should also be provided. Ten (10) complete copies of all documentation should be provided.

6. The application will be in English and a committee chosen by the Swedish Hypertension Society’s Stipendiary committee will decide on any award. If deemed necessary, internationally respected researchers’ expertise will be sought to assist in the decision making process.

7. The Stipendiary committee will be composed of at least three (3) and a maximum of seven (7) representatives chosen by the Swedish Hypertension Society and at least two (2) and a maximum of six (6) representatives chosen by respective sponsors. The majority of the Stipendiary committee will always be composed of independent non-corporately linked members.

8. The Stipendium Awards will be announced at the Cardiovascular spring meeting or any other suitable meeting where the primary applicant is delivering an address linked to the project for which the award is being presented.

9. Eligibility for these awards is not connected to any undertaking outside the parameters presented within this document.

10. The committee will select a candidate or candidates no later than three (3) months after the application close in the application year. Candidates will be notified of the decision in writing. The committee’s decision is final and may not be appealed.

11. The same applicant may not receive an award in more than three (3) consecutive years.

12. The recipient of the award shall undertake that the proposed research or education program referred to in the application is carried out according to the specification. It is a condition of the award that within one year of the award, a written report (1-2 A4 pages) will be provided to the Lennart Hansson Board of Directors.
